Countless homes, schools, and other buildings still contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Unfortunately, thousands of building materials once contained asbestos, many of which can still be found in older buildings.
These ACMs can pose significant health risks if they are disturbed during renovations, demolitions, or even simple maintenance activities. When intact and undisturbed, asbestos materials may not be immediately hazardous. However, once these materials are broken, cut, drilled, or otherwise disrupted, microscopic asbestos fibers can become airborne.
Asbestos fibers are invisible to the naked eye and can be easily inhaled, entering the lungs and causing serious health concerns. Exposure to these airborne fibers is linked to several life-threatening diseases, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. The health effects often do not appear until decades after exposure, making early detection difficult and treatment more complicated.
“Due to these dangers, and because in many situations there are rules and regulations around disturbing ACMs, it's critical that property owners and contractors take proper precautions when dealing with suspected asbestos materials,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Attempting to remove or handle asbestos-containing materials without proper training and equipment can worsen contamination and put more people at risk. Following local regulations and safety protocols helps to ensure that asbestos is managed safely, protecting both current and future occupants of the building.”
To help property owners, contractors, and others involved with renovation, remodeling, and demolition projects, EMSL Analytical offers material, environmental, and industrial hygiene testing services to detect and mitigate exposure to asbestos, lead, and other hazardous substances. They have testing laboratories throughout North America and also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools, and personal protective equipment. These resources safeguard workers, building occupants, and the public. They can also be instrumental in meeting federal, state, and local regulations concerning ACMs and other regulated substances.
