The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a recall of sliced canned pears imported from China, citing concerns over elevated levels of lead and cadmium.
According to the FDA notice, the presence of these heavy metals poses serious health risks, particularly to infants, children, and pregnant individuals. Chronic exposure to even low levels of lead or cadmium can lead to developmental delays, learning disabilities, and reduced IQ in children, often without visible symptoms. In severe cases, symptoms in individuals of any age may include abdominal pain, vomiting, weakness, mood changes, and seizures.
The contamination was detected through sampling conducted by the Maryland Department of Health under the FDA’s Laboratory Flexible Funding Model program. Consumers are advised not to eat the affected product and to either dispose of it safely or to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
“Product recalls like this highlight the critical importance of thorough testing throughout the supply chain,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we offer extensive food testing services to help manufacturers, importers, and retailers identify contaminants such as heavy metals, allergens, and pesticides before products reach consumers.”
In addition to heavy metal analysis, EMSL Analytical provides microbial and chemical contaminant testing, shelf life studies, FDA import detention assistance, HACCP guidance, and labeling compliance services.
