Title Identifying Dust Allergens to Optimize Conditions in the Built Environment
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, and air monitoring instruments to detect and mitigate exposure to a wide range of allergens, respiratory irritants, and asthma triggers.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, September 29, 2025

Everyone has at one time or another experienced sneezing, a runny nose, or itchy eyes after coming into contact with dust in their home, school, or work environment. Dust often contains aeroallergens, which are airborne substances, such as mold or pet dander that can trigger an allergic reaction in some people following inhalation or dermal contact. With some asthmatics, aeroallergens could trigger an asthma attack, or potentially worsen other respiratory diseases.

When dust becomes airborne, it can remain in the air for long periods of time and settle throughout an indoor space. Dust can contain a number of different substances, including numerous allergens. These may include allergens from dust mites, cockroaches, pollen, pets, rodents, mold, latex, and other sources.

“In some circumstances, indoor dust could also contain lead from deteriorating lead-based paints, asbestos fibers if asbestos was used in the property, and potentially other exposure concerns,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “

EMSL Analytical’s laboratories, we offer indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and air monitoring instruments to identify a wide range of allergens, respiratory irritants, asthma triggers, and other indoor contaminants. If elevated levels are detected, steps can then be taken to mitigate or eliminate exposure.”

EMSL recently sponsored an educational video about dust allergens in the built environment that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/7eaWico46uw
