Each October, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes National Children’s Health Month to raise awareness about protecting children from environmental hazards in the places they live, learn, and play.

Children are especially vulnerable to environmental contaminants from infancy through adolescence. Their smaller size, developing bodies, and natural behaviors, such as crawling on floors, playing outdoors, or placing objects in their mouths, can increase exposure to harmful substances like lead paint chips, pesticides, mold, and other pollutants.
