The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 16 million U.S. adults live with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with many more undiagnosed. COPD remains one of the nation’s leading causes of death.
While smoking is a well-known contributor, the CDC cautions that other factors, including exposure to indoor and workplace air pollutants, genetics, and respiratory infections, also increase the risk of developing COPD.
COPD is a progressive condition that makes breathing difficult. Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent coughing or wheezing
- Excess mucus or phlegm production
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty taking deep breaths
“Although there is no cure, COPD can be managed and treated,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Reducing exposure to airborne pollutants can make a meaningful difference for those living with COPD and may help prevent new cases. National COPD Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness and promote prevention strategies. EMSL is proud to support these efforts. Our laboratories provide testing for a broad range of microbial and chemical contaminants that may impact respiratory health. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment.”
EMSL previously sponsored an educational video on National COPD Awareness Month, which is still available to view at: https://youtu.be/Sbl4FLOFBmc
