Title Supermarket to Pay $300,000 Settlement Over Improper Asbestos Removal
Introduction EMSL Analytical delivers testing solutions to detect and reduce asbestos exposure risks, safeguarding public health and supporting regulatory compliance.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, November 11, 2025

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has announced a settlement with a regional supermarket chain following allegations that the company violated the Massachusetts Clean Air Act and state asbestos regulations. According to the AGO, the violations stem from the improper removal of asbestos-containing floor tiles, where required safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal were not followed.

Asbestos is a hazardous substance and a known human carcinogen. Commonly used in older construction materials, including roofing, flooring, siding, wallboard, insulation, and caulking, it poses significant health risks when disturbed. Improper handling can release microscopic fibers into the air, which remain breathable for hours. Inhalation of these fibers can cause permanent lung damage, including scarring, asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Because of these dangers, there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.

“Under this settlement, the businesses will pay up to $300,000 in civil penalties,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This case highlights the importance of strict compliance with asbestos regulations, not only to safeguard employees and building occupants, but also to protect a company’s reputation and avoid costly enforcement actions.”

To support compliance efforts, EMSL Analytical operates an asbestos testing laboratory in Massachusetts, along with dozens of additional locations across North America. EMSL provides laboratory testing, sampling supplies, personal protective equipment, and air monitoring instruments to contractors, property owners, property managers, developers, and environmental professionals. These resources help organizations reduce exposure risks and help to ensure compliance with state and federal asbestos requirements.
