The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced its intent to regulate nearly one dozen industrial uses of 1,3-butadiene to better protect American workers. Following a comprehensive risk evaluation, the EPA identified potential unreasonable health risks in eleven industrial use scenarios and is moving forward with regulatory action under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
1,3-butadiene is a colorless gas commonly used in the production of synthetic rubber, plastics, adhesives, and sealants. While consumer exposure is considered minimal, elevated occupational exposure has been linked to serious health effects, including blood disorders and certain cancers.
EMSL Analytical supports employers and safety professionals responding to these regulatory developments through:
- Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Testing: Air monitoring and sampling services to assess workplace 1,3-butadiene exposure levels.
- PPE Evaluation and Access: Assistance selecting and validating appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Compliance Support: Guidance on interpreting results and aligning safety programs with OSHA and EPA requirements.
“We recognize the importance of the EPA’s actions in safeguarding worker health,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “By aligning our advanced analytical services with regulatory developments, we help employers not only meet compliance expectations but also proactively protect their workforce. As the EPA advances the rule-making process, EMSL remains committed to providing timely analytical support and practical industrial hygiene solutions.”
