Title EPA and HHS Announce Major Actions on Microplastics in Drinking Water
Introduction EMSL Analytical supports detection and analysis of emerging contaminants with laboratory resources across North America.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, April 15, 2026

Announcements earlier this month from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mark an important step in addressing microplastics and other emerging contaminants in drinking water. The agencies plan to expand monitoring and research efforts, including adding microplastics and pharmaceuticals to the EPA’s Contaminant Candidate List under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

This move represents a key action toward understanding the presence and potential health impacts of these contaminants. By adding microplastics to the list, the EPA is launching nationwide monitoring, research, and data collection efforts that could shape future regulations.

Microplastics, tiny plastic particles found in water, food, and air, have been detected in drinking water and even within the human body. While research continues, studies suggest possible links to adverse health effects, highlighting the need for reliable testing.

EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading network of environmental testing laboratories, offers comprehensive services to identify microplastics, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, PFAS, pesticides, and a wide range of microbial and other chemical contaminants in water. These services help municipalities, environmental professionals, industrial hygienists, and facility managers meet compliance requirements and protect public health.

“As regulatory focus expands to include emerging contaminants like microplastics, access to high-quality laboratory testing is more important than ever,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical stands ready to help our clients navigate evolving requirements with advanced testing solutions and expert support.”
