Title CDC and FDA Investigate Drug-Resistant Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Dietary Supplement
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides advanced product testing solutions to support public health protection and reduce the risk of costly recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, April 17, 2026

Recent federal safety actions underscore the importance of routine product testing and proactive quality assurance programs. According to a recent recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), certain dietary supplement capsules were voluntarily recalled after testing indicated possible contamination with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious infections, particularly among vulnerable populations. The FDA noted that symptoms of infection may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and in rare cases can lead to severe complications.

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an outbreak investigation update linking multiple illnesses across several states to the same moringa capsule products. Public health officials reported that several individuals were hospitalized, and the outbreak strain was identified as extensively drug-resistant, highlighting the heightened risks associated with contaminated consumer goods and the challenges of treatment in such cases.

“Incidents like these demonstrate why preventive laboratory testing is essential throughout the supply chain,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “By identifying microbiological hazards early, companies can protect consumers, maintain regulatory compliance, and avoid the significant financial and operational impacts associated with recalls.”

EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive testing services designed to help organizations proactively manage product safety risks, including:

  • Microbiological testing for pathogens such as Salmonella, coli, and Listeria
  • Raw material and finished product analysis
  • Environmental monitoring and contamination assessments
  • Quality assurance support and regulatory compliance testing

Proactive testing programs can help businesses detect contamination before products enter distribution channels, helping to prevent public health incidents, protect brand reputation, and reduce costly disruptions.
