Title Secondhand Smoke in Apartments Poses Ongoing Health Risks for Residents
Introduction EMSL Analytical’s laboratory services, sampling supplies, test kits, and air monitoring instruments help to identify tobacco and marijuana smoke, vaping aerosols, and other airborne chemicals and surface residues.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, June 15, 2026

Secondhand smoke exposure remains a significant public health concern, particularly for residents of apartments and other multi-unit housing. A recent blog from the American Lung Association explains that smoke from neighboring units can travel through ventilation systems, cracks in walls, gaps under doors, plumbing penetrations, and electrical outlets, exposing nonsmokers to harmful pollutants.

Health experts warn there is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure. According to the American Lung Association, breathing in these pollutants can increase the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory illnesses, with children, older adults, and individuals with preexisting conditions being especially vulnerable.

To help identify and address indoor air quality concerns related to tobacco smoke infiltration, EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use sampling kits, and real-time air monitoring instruments designed to detect airborne contaminants and particulate matter associated with smoke exposure.

“Secondhand smoke infiltration in multi-unit housing can be difficult to document without reliable testing and monitoring tools,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Air sampling and analytical services can help environmental professionals, property managers, and residents better understand indoor air conditions and evaluate potential exposure risks.”

Public health experts continue to emphasize that smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing are one of the most effective ways to protect residents from secondhand smoke exposure. When concerns arise, air testing and monitoring can provide important data to support investigations and mitigation efforts.

EMSL recently sponsored an educational video that shares health risks associated with secondhand smoke and aerosols that can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/XmvT4fCToto
