Title Imported Nail Polish Recall Linked to Chemical Concerns
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers cosmetic and consumer product testing services to detect chemicals, heavy metals, microbial contaminants, and other regulated substances to protect consumers and help prevent costly recalls.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, July 29, 2026

EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading provider of laboratory testing services for cosmetics and consumer goods, is reminding manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers that chemical and microbial testing can help prevent costly product recalls, protect brand reputation, and keep unsafe products out of the marketplace.

Recent recalls involving cosmetics and consumer products highlight the risks of contaminated or improperly formulated goods. In one case, a nail polish imported from China was recalled due to the detection of methylene chloride and chloroform. Products have also been recalled due to microbial contamination, other prohibited ingredients, and mislabeling.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues expanding oversight of cosmetics under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA). Manufacturers and importers are responsible for ensuring products are safe, properly labeled, and free of harmful contaminants before entering commerce.

To help protect consumers and companies, EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive laboratory services to identify potential issues before products reach the market, including:

  • Microbial testing for bacteria, mold, and yeast.
  • Pathogen screening for organisms such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella.
  • Chemical analyses for prohibited ingredients, heavy metals, solvents, allergens, and VOCs.
  • Preservative efficacy and product stability testing.
  • Raw material, finished product, and packaging evaluations.
  • Import screening for foreign-manufactured goods.

“Laboratory testing is one of the most effective ways to reduce recall risk,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Identifying contamination or hazardous chemicals early can help avoid financial losses, legal exposure, and brand damage. EMSL supports companies across the cosmetic, personal care, and consumer goods industries with fast, accurate, and defensible results.”
