Title Summer Heat Can Impact Indoor Air Quality, Experts Warn
Introduction EMSL Analytical highlights how rising temperatures and humidity may trigger mold growth, chemical emissions, and ventilation challenges inside buildings.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, August 17, 2026

As summer temperatures rise across the country, most attention focuses on outdoor heat. However, experts say warmer weather can also influence indoor environments and potentially affect air quality inside homes, offices, schools, and other buildings.

According to EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading North American laboratory specializing in indoor environmental quality and industrial hygiene testing, elevated temperatures and humidity can create conditions that allow indoor pollutants to develop or accumulate more quickly.

“Summer heat doesn’t just affect the outdoors, it can also change what’s happening inside buildings,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Warmer, more humid conditions can accelerate mold growth and increase emissions from common materials, making indoor air quality an important seasonal consideration.”

Warm, damp environments can encourage mold growth, especially when moisture from condensation, leaks, or elevated humidity is present. At the same time, higher temperatures can increase the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from materials such as paints, adhesives, flooring, furniture, and cleaning products.

Cooling systems can also influence indoor air quality. In some cases, buildings may reduce outdoor air intake to improve cooling efficiency, which can allow indoor pollutants to accumulate if ventilation systems are not properly balanced.

Maintaining proper ventilation, controlling humidity levels, and conducting routine indoor air quality testing can help identify potential concerns before they worsen.

To help in this effort, EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services for mold, bacteria, chemicals, and other contaminants, along with sampling supplies, monitoring instruments, and convenient test kits to evaluate indoor environmental conditions.
