A university medical center was concerned that their fish and fish eggs used for research were infected with some type of white microbial organism. Samples were sent to EMSL and we cultured the unknown organism from the fish eggs as well as samples of the environment where the problem occurred. We isolated several different fungal genera and found Aphanomyces fungus, a serious fish pathogen that was responsible for causing disease in their fish. EMSL’s PCR laboratory confirmed this finding through DNA sequencing.
