Erionite is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that belongs to the zeolite group of hydrated aluminosilicates. Presently, erionite is mostly found as an environmental contaminate, which has not been mined or marketed for commercial purposes since the late 1980’s. Similar to asbestos, it is a naturally occurring mineral that has been designated by IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) as a Group 1 Carcinogen. Erionite deposits are found worldwide and there are several deposits in the Western United States as well as North and South Dakota.
When disturbed during excavation, construction or recreational activities, these deposits can cause the erionite fibers to become airborne. EMSL Analytical, Inc. is one of the few laboratories in the country acknowledged by the North Dakota Department of Health as being able to conduct erionite analysis. Our experienced scientists have assisted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Nevada Department of Transportation (NV DOT) in conducting erionite analysis. Our extensive instrumentation means that we can offer a suite of analytical approaches, all done in house. Our instrumentation includes: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force and Electron Back-Scatter Microscopy.
