The Mullen Burst Tester is designed to evaluate the burst strength of various membranes, fabrics, plastic sheeting and paper products. This instrument is applicable to the evaluation of many textiles such as fabrics for clothing or furniture and building products such as vapor and moisture barriers. Many common paper products from holiday wrapping paper to commercial shipping wraps can be evaluated.
Samples are placed into the Mullen Burst Tester and hydraulic pressure is applied to a diaphragm. The maximum pressure at the time of sample failure is recorded. Evaluation of the type of failure can be performed such as recurring tears along a specific direction or bursts originating from a localized point.
Common methods include:
- ASTM D774 - Standard Test Method for Bursting Strength of Paper
- ASTM D3796 - Standard Test Method for Bursting Strength of Textile Fabrics – Diaphragm Bursting Strength Tester Method
