Title Lead Paint Issue at Daycare Center Has Parents Concerned
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides testing services to identify lead and other toxic materials from environmental samples to help prevent exposure risks.

Charlotte, NC, July 8th, 2015

Last month, the Gaston Gazette published a story about a daycare center in North Carolina that may have exposed children to lead.  According to the article, paints chips from an awning were deposited onto the ground when it was pressure washed.  Testing later found that the paint had elevated lead levels.

Children playing in areas with lead-based paint chips or contaminated dusts or soils are at risk for lead poisoning.  This is in part due to their hand to mouth activities and because their growing bodies are highly susceptible to toxic heavy metals such as lead.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are no safe blood lead levels in children and this toxic metal can affect nearly every system in the body.

The use of lead-based paints was banned in the United States in the late 1970s, but many older properties still contain the paints.  These can be a health hazard as they degrade or if they are disturbed during cleaning, renovation or demolition activities.

“The good news is that we have created a simple-to-use test kit to aid in identifying and mitigating exposure risks,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Testing for lead-based paints is quick and easily identifies potential hazards both inside and outside of homes and buildings.  EMSL’s test kits, analytical services and comprehensive range of sampling supplies are available to the public as well as environmental and health professionals.”
