Cinnaminson, NJ,  June 14th , 2019

EMSL Analytical, Inc. is hosting an “Erionite and Naturally Occurring Asbestos: Permits, Analysis and Managing Risk Workshop” on Tuesday, October 1st in Bend, Oregon. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM followed by the training, which will run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

In recent years, there has been an increased trend in determining and characterizing naturally occurring mineral deposits for asbestos, erionite and other fibrous minerals. Samples collected outside of building atmospheres pose a unique challenge to analysis. Minerals can look chemically different based on locality and are often not the only mineral present. Therefore, it often takes a suite of analyses and a team of experienced analysts to characterize these samples.

“EMSL has been on the forefront of naturally occurring asbestos analysis and has created this workshop to broaden the knowledge of industry professionals,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This training, led by EMSL’s Robyn Ray, will focus on erionite and natural occurrences of asbestos.”

The morning session will open with a general overview of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) permitting process when naturally occurring hazardous minerals may be present. In the afternoon, sampling techniques for NOA/erionite in soil and rock including incremental sampling will be explained. The instructors will go over analysis techniques for NOA/erionite including XRD, PLM, TEM, PCM, SEM and FBAS. Information on managing occurrences of NOA/erionite including wet controls, limit personnel and training will be covered. The session will conclude with best management practices for minimizing exposures to workers, reducing off-site tracking of materials and long-term management.

This workshop will be held at the Riverhouse on Deschutes Convention Center located at 3075 North Highway 97 in Bend, Oregon. To register online, please click here. To download the PDF flyer with more information, please click here.
